Unlike Sam Worthington, Zach Quinto can be whoever he wants to be. And apparently, he gets to be George Gershwin next! There were abortive and terrifying movies that other work meant that he wasn't going to continue being Spock, which fortunately have been shot down. But even if they had been true, I would have remained pretty excited about this project. I'll admit that I have a weakness for projects that have some element of African-American-Jewish relations to them (something I define loosely enough to include, for example, Independence Day, whose fantastic "I'm not Jewish." "Nobody's perfect," exchange I had completely forgotten until I caught the end of the movie on cable before the Grammys). And so Gershwin's engagement with African-American music and his heritage as a Russian Jew are definitely up my alley, and something I hope they'll work on.
I also just think Tin Pan Alley has a lot of style, and that it'll be nice to see Quinto in a role where he's neither a grubby superpowered serial killer, nor a super-restrained half-alien. Maybe this isn't something I should say, but I'd really like for there to be an actor other than Neil Patrick Harris who is either openly gay or widely assumed to be, who is able to play suave straight-man roles. NPH has been so alone out there that it's become something of a nudge-and-wink. The bigger the fraternity it is, the harder those jokes will be. And the more roles will be open to more talented actors and actresses.
