Controversial Favorites

Michael Tomasky thinks that an American politician could never get away with admitting that Samuel Beckett is his or her favorite playwright.  Matt Yglesias says it's hardly the most surprising cultural choice our current president made in his early career.  If I might offer an alternate suggestion to both of them, a politician would REALLY get in trouble if they said their favorite playwright was Tony Kushner.  AIDS!  The gays!  Mormons becoming born-again New Yorkers!  A multicultural and transgendered heaven!  Accidental prophecy when it comes to the September 11 attacks!  Now that'd get folks rumbling.
