1) Why we need a remake of Skins for American audiences. 2) Why we need a remake of Prime Suspect for American audiences. 3) Why the UK needs its own version of Law & Order (even though Jamie Bamber is in it, and so, yum, and I look forward to its American availability here in the States). One of the things I like so much about watching British television shows is precisely their Britishness. The race and gender politics of State of Play and Prime Suspect are different than those in comparable American police and journalism dramas: those differences are useful different angles. Bureaucracy in Spooks functions vastly differently than it does in NCIS (and I must say I dramatically prefer the nuanced civil service heroes of the former to the stereotypical British doctor and overdetermined Goth hacker of the latter), and the contrast tells me a great deal about the difference between how America and the UK are responding to an evolving threat environment. I imagine if I were British, the unfamiliar New York terrain and relationship patterns of Law & Order would be equally illuminating for me, even if I'd visited there. So why we can't move towards better, broader syndication instead of remakes is beyond me.
