Two Thoughts Inspired By Hot in Cleveland

I haven't gotten a chance to check out Hot in Cleveland yet, but it's definitely something I'll watch in re-runs, and what I've heard about it has raised two fairly random questions for me. 1) Why aren't more people crediting the location for the show's success, or at least talking about its potential impact? The Los Angeles-to-Ohio premise strikes me as a reflection of a real hunger for shows located outside of the usual suspect cities, and also, of understandable nerves about competition and insane standards for looks, behavior, and success in the big city. I have some issues with the premise of the show, namely that older women are ugly, and Midwestern men's standards are lower. But I do think there's some legitimacy to the idea that major American cities can come across as overwhelming and unpleasant in pop culture, no matter how young and pretty and talented you are, and that smaller cities may come across as more relatable.

2) I went through her IMDb listing, and I'm pretty sure Wendie Malick hasn't been in anything I've seen since The American President fifteen years ago. But when I saw her on screen in trailers for Hot, I knew I'd seen her somewhere. That's quite the lasting impression to leave. It makes me wonder why she hasn't been in more good stuff.
